What it is about
Anyone caring for a family member at home needs a break now and then – for a holiday, their own doctor's appointments or because they are ill themselves. For this time, the long-term care fund pays the proven costs of replacement care: the so-called respite care (Verhinderungspflege).
Who is entitled?
- People in need of care from care level 2 who are cared for at home.
- The former requirement that the carer must have provided care for six months already no longer applies since July 2025.
- Respite care can be used in one block or by the hour.
Who may provide the replacement care?
If a home care service like ARTANS takes over, the full annual amount can be used. More distant relatives or neighbours can also provide the replacement care.
If close relatives (related by blood or marriage up to the second degree, or living in the same household) provide care on a non-professional basis, lower maximum amounts apply. Proven expenses of the replacement carer, for example travel costs or loss of earnings, can be reimbursed in addition.
We are here to help! We are happy to discuss which amounts apply in your case and how to apply for respite care at your long-term care fund – call us: 089 / 350 99 380.
What has changed?
In the past, there were separate budgets for respite care and short-term care that could only partly be transferred. Since 1 July 2025, both have been merged into a joint annual amount that you can use flexibly for both services. This particularly benefits families who need replacement care for a longer period.
As of October 2026. All information without guarantee – the information from your long-term care fund is binding.
